To this day, I still consider it one of the most magical nights we've ever had—one of those rare evenings where everything simply clicked into place.
It wasn't without a few minor blunders, of course. But seeing her smile from the beginning until the very end told me everything I needed to know. It really was magic.
Her birthday falls in November, and following my own little Rule of Three, I wanted us to celebrate it in three different ways. Each one had to be something that connected deeply to who she is.

1. Jennie.
One of the first things I learned about Dani was just how much she loves dogs.
Whenever our colleagues brought their dogs to the office, she would always be among the first to greet them. And somehow, the dogs always seemed just as excited to see her. They naturally gravitated toward her, and I loved watching those little interactions.
I couldn't wait for her to meet the dogs back at our home—Ringo, Timmy, and Prima.
She has dogs of her own back home, too. But by then, her favorite one, Jennie, had already crossed the rainbow bridge. She had told me more than once how much she missed her.
That's when the idea came to me.

Maybe Jennie couldn't be with Dani physically anymore, but she could still be with her in another way—as a reminder of all the memories they shared.
So I searched for one of those custom shirts printed with a dog's face. Thankfully, I found one. It even came with a few matching stickers.
It wasn't meant to replace Jennie.
It was simply a way of saying that the ones we love never really leave us completely.
2. Birthday Treat.
I wanted her birthday celebration to be unlike any other.
I could've planned the usual dinner date, gone on another road trip, or watched a movie together. Don't get me wrong—I love doing all those things with Dani. But this was our first birthday together, and I wanted it to become one of those stories we'd still laugh about years later.
So I decided to throw her...
...a kids' birthday party.
The first thing I checked was her actual birthday. I wanted everything to happen on the day itself, but work was becoming increasingly hectic for everyone, including her.
So I started sending invitations.
One by one, I privately messaged our friends.
Then I searched for her own friends online and sent them invitations too—even though none of them knew who I was.
Looking back, I can't really blame them for ignoring me.
Imagine receiving a random message from some stranger claiming to be organizing a surprise birthday party for your friend.
I'd probably think it was a prank too.
Still, I reserved a place that could accommodate everyone, just in case they decided to come.
As the day drew closer, I confirmed the attendance of our friends. Thankfully, almost everyone was able to make it.
Planning something like this isn't easy. Getting people together is probably one of the hardest parts of organizing any surprise.
For the venue, I picked the McDonald's just a minute away from our office. It was convenient for everyone, and honestly, it perfectly matched the whole kids' party theme.

When her birthday finally came, I told her we'd go out after work for a birthday date.
I imagine she thought it would just be the two of us.
On the way there, I casually told her I was getting hungry and suggested we grab a quick bite at McDonald's.
Just a quick bite.
Little did she know, waiting inside the party area were all the friends I'd gathered to celebrate with her.
As we walked closer to the tables, everyone suddenly cheered.
Then I saw it.
Her eyes widened.
Her smile slowly appeared.
And for me, that single moment made every bit of planning worth it.
Happy birthday, Dani.
We spent the rest of the evening playing party games.

| HAPPY BIRTHDAY, DANI! |
Looking back now, it's funny seeing a bunch of young adults enthusiastically playing the same parlor games we'd enjoyed as kids.
But maybe that's exactly why I loved it.
Watching her laugh that much made me happier than I can explain.
She deserved every bit of it.
To be honest, I don't even remember where I got the idea of throwing a kids' birthday party.
What I do remember is why I wanted to do it.
She makes me feel like a kid again.
Like I'm learning, all over again, what it means to love someone—and to be loved in return.
3. Hometown Trip.
The final chapter of the celebration.
Elyu.
La Union.
Remember when I said I wanted every part of her birthday to feel personal?
This was the most personal one of all.
It had already been months since she'd last gone home, and I knew how much she missed her hometown, her family, and everything familiar about the place she grew up in.
So we spent a few days there.

| Flotsam, we didn't stay here that much though |
We enjoyed the sea breeze, soaked in the slower pace of life, explored local cafés and restaurants we'd been excitedly searching for while planning the trip, and simply enjoyed being where she felt most at home.

It wasn't actually our first trip out of town—we'd sneaked away to Rizal a month earlier, which is a story for another time—but this one felt different.

It felt like the perfect way to end a birthday celebration for someone as lovable as Danica.
It wasn't my birthday.
