Life of Brian

The last time I sent you something through this, I sent my hopes of winning you back. I couldn't help but think that now could be something different.

For starters, I haven't written anything like this for quite a long while. I have been preoccupied with work, my struggles, and the things that I did in between; although mostly that would be work - being that I had quite a time trying to distract myself from the things that have been hurting me.

I tried doing therapies, or "receiving" rather. I said "tried" because I never continued them enough to be successful, I haven't had a taste of that success, sweet victory, and I couldn't even bother to ask why because in itself, that would be another way of contemplating - something that I had been trying to miss.

But still, it has been a "hit and miss". Life has been a hit and miss. It's a mess. By now, the penultimate conclusion I might have to give to this would be to distance myself from anyone. Luckily, COVID taught us we could do that, and at that, for a very long time. I've had this verse in my head that I just couldn't continue, probably something mental, but here it went, "Gone are the party hats, we're doing birthdays in facial masks...".

I've made up catchy verses before, I should know when I saw one. But, going back, a lot has been written about love, and the absence of it. Funnily enough, I came across two songs last night connected through Paul McCartney. One was something McCartney wrote but was given to Peter and Gordon, "A World Without Love". The longing of the composer was disguised through the upbeat music. Happy chords, grievous chords. In the end, the song would beg its listeners, "Would you be brave enough to live in a world without love?"

The next one would be "God Only Knows" by The Beach Boys, a masterpiece from Brian Wilson. Paul McCartney had praised the song and the album where it came from multiple times, one that inspired him to create his own masterpiece, "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band". In "God Only Knows", another mystery was raised, "What could I be without you? God Only Knows."

I've officially entered a quarter of life, though I wouldn't be expecting to reach a full century. And at this point, I've come to realize that I might not be fully equipped to be with someone, to be someone's someone.

At best, I'm a distraction. At worst, I'm the destruction.

Without love, and without you, what could one person really be?

God only knows.

10 Elton John Songs Playing On Repeat

As I've written a few posts ago, I just watched the Sir Elton John biopic, "Rocket Man" due to the lengthy lockdown we have been having due to the Coronavirus scare.

Not only was I given the chance of viewing the film, I also had the chance of being introduced to other Elton John songs I haven't really given any attention before.

Here are other Elton John and Bernie Taupin masterpieces I've completely been under the influence of during the past few days.

1. Don't Let the Sun Go Down on Me
I first heard this song on Elton John's Live Aid performance with George Michael, and again on the Music for Montserrat concert.

2. Tiny Dancer

3. Crocodile Rock

4. The Bitch Is Back

5. I Want Love

6. Saturday's Night Alright (For Fighting)

7. I'm Gonna Love Me Again

8. Rocket Man

9. We All Fall In Love Sometimes

10. I Guess That's Why They Call It The Blues

The Greatest Love Song of All Time

Love, this one's for you to read. Give the song a listen.

Love has been the subject of different songs from different genres. Still, for me, one song has stood out over that crowded room of love songs for the people that we love.

"Something" by, arguably, the greatest band of all time, The Beatles, was written by guitarist George Harrison. This song was featured on the group 1969 album, Abbey Road. (By the way, congratulations to the Beatles! And to Beatles fans also. The anniversary release of Abbey Road has been #1 on the charts! For a band that has broken up decades ago, that's something!)  Although the title could sound vague, it could be a reflection that love could be really vague, and uncertain, but still be love.

George Harrison from The Beatles' promo video for "Something" from beatlesebooks.com

Regarded by some as George Harrison's song to his wife during that era, Pattie Boyd. However, Harrison claimed in interviews during that '70s that the inspiration was just love in general.

The song starts by saying that there is something in the way she moves that attracts him like no other. For a lot of us, love starts when we start to be attracted to someone in whatever form we can be. We do not know the reason, nor do we know how it happened; but the thing is, we are being pulled deep into the attraction. And as lovers, we want it.

The second stanza opens up and implies that there is an existing interaction. The smile, as implied by the line "That I don't need no other lover", says that the woman is secured enough to know that the lover may be contented, faithful, and at least, happy being with her and seeing that something in her smile.

However, we are given a sort of a little tension in the interaction of the two, the relationship. Just as most lovers do, the characters in the song also experienced the struggle of being with another person - the adjustments, the compromises, and the drive to keep the smile on each others faces.

"You're asking me will my love grow
I don't know, I don't know
You stick around and it may show
I don't know, I don't know"

In terms of love, we do not really have a vision of what will happen between us and our lovers. The best that we can have is a projection of what can happen, of what we want to be the reflection of our love. Will my love grow? I don't know. Will I ever grow as a person, as one-half of this relationship? I don't know. Despite all that, I hope you will still stick around.

The last stanza drives us back to the reality that love is still having its effect on love. Love is sure that love is more than enough. Going back to the stanzas, the way that she woos, her style, and the things that she shows - these are enough for her lover to go head over heels for her.

"I don't want to leave her now,
You know I believe and how"

That is really something, and that is called love.

MOVIE REVIEW: Bohemian Rhapsody

Is this real life? Is this just fantasy?

Queen from mentalfloss.com

Upon watching the very first trailer of this movie, I have been hyped already. Just by seeing that they remade the Wembley Stadium for the Live Aid performance of Queen.

For someone who has been listening to Queen like me, the hype for this movie was very real, as expected. Once the movie hit the theaters, I was very eager to watch it.

I did watch it. However, I had some problems when I did. Normally, I would choose to point out the better things that the movie did. In here, I would like to point out some of the things they got wrong.

This list is not arranged in any particular order, just how I remembered them after watching.

1. We Will Rock You
This one was very obvious for it was already in the trailers. What made it wrong was the time that it happened in the movie, thus, the appearance of the band members. We Will Rock You, written by Brian May, was released in the album "News Of The World" in 1977. The scene depicted in the movie seemed to happen in 1980-1981. Although Brian May, and Roger Taylor, did little change to their appearance, Freddie Mercury and John Deacon changed their hairs. Mercury even had his trademark mustache which he had grown at the start of the Eighties.

2. Fat Bottomed Girls
Just like We Will Rock You, Fat Bottomed Girls was written on a later time than the film had shown. Apparently, Queen performed it in their 1974 tour, rocking this song with the crowd. Although the crowd would be surely pumped to hear them play this song live, the song would not be written and performed in 1978 during the era of Queen's 8th album, Jazz.

3. Paul Prenter
Paul Prenter really did out Freddie Mercury and revealed secrets, but not on a television interview. But on a news article released by the newspaper, The Sun.

4. Pre-Live Aid Diagnosis
In the movie, Freddie Mercury took an HIV test after hearing the AIDS outbreak in a news report. Alarmed, he went into a clinic for a test. A few moments later, the doctor revealed that he had acquired the virus. This happened before they even rehearsed for their Live Aid performance. In reality, Mercury took the test un 1987, two years after Live Aid, and a year after Queen's final tour in 1986.

5. U2
As Queen was entering the Live Aid stage in Wembley Stadium, a band was seen exiting the stage resembling U2. This was not the case back in 1985 because the previous band that performed before Queen was Dire Straits.

6. Breaking Up The Band
One conflict happened in the movie when CBS Records offer Freddie Mercury a solo recording deal for two albums. However, the true story was that Roger Taylor already had a solo release back in the early Eighties with his "Fun In Space" album, and Brian May also had one called "Star Fleet Project" which was credited as "Brian May + Friends", even before Mercury's "Mr. Bad Guy" was released. The solo works were never a big deal in the band in real life.

7. Jim Hutton
In the movie, Jim Hutton worked as a waiter on one of Freddie Mercury's parties. However, Hutton was an Irish hairdresser before he and Mercury met in a bar and stayed close together until Mercury's death in 1991.

8. Long Time No Play
Another issue that the band had to overcome was the fact that they were on a hiatus before Live Aid because of Freddie Mercury's solo work, meaning they had not performed in a long time. They were scared to perform before a very huge crowd. In reality, Queen did take a year off on tour in 1983, but the group was back on tour as support to their 1984 album "The Works". The tour concluded just a few weeks before Live Aid.

9.  John Deacon
Queen had three bassists before landing John Deacon. Fast forward to the Game Tour, Deacon wore the exact same clothes as in the movie. However, in available footages of the Game Tour, Deacon would remove his jacket as early as after the third song (usually before "Somebody To Love"). Since the footage shown in the movie was "We Will Rock You" which was always played at the end of their concerts, it would be out of character for Deacon to still be wearing his jacket.

10. Ayyy-Oh
After singing "We Will Rock You" in that scene, Freddie Mercury reached onto the crowd by doing his vocal improvisations, the Ayyy-Oh chant specifically. However, "We Will Rock Youimmediatelyey leads into the intro of "We Are The Champions". Also, Mercury did his vocal improvisations, in a different manner, in the transition between "Now I'm Here" and "Dragon Attack".

This was written not to throw shade at the film, nor the filmmakers. "Bohemian Rhapsody" (movie) was a very enjoyable treat to us fans and a good introduction to new fans. Actually, I have watched it multiple times already since its opening weeks in the theaters.

This post was written to note the facts neglected in the movie as they were recorded in history because there could be times when movie viewers wouldn't know how to differentiate facts from not, and eventually, tell a misleading story about their subjects.

In this day and age of technology, information is just one click, or tap, away. But still with filtering of what you are reading, of course.

Top Five Moments from Sir Paul McCartney's Free NYC Show

Because I enjoyed every bit of Sir Paul McCartney's live-streamed NYC concert, I watched it repeatedly, to be honest, I made a list of moments that I mostly enjoyed.

Resulta ng larawan para sa paulmccartney free nyc
Paul McCartney and the band from YouTube.com

1. I've Got A Feeling
If you have watched most of Sir Paul's concert films and some of his recent performances, you would know that on the first time that he will switch to his Les Paul, he would play "Let Me Roll It". Surprisingly, he played "I've Got A Feeling". Nothing big here, just a fun twisting of details that most fans would surely notice.

2. Mini Stories
Sir Paul has been doing interviews over the years about his entire life, but the short stories he shared before starting songs were incomparable. An example of this was when he shared the story of how he got to sing the vocals on "Love Me Do". Another one was the story of the line, "Life goes on, bra!" in "Ob-la-di, ob-la-da".

3. Classic My Valentine
As a dedication to his wife, Sir Paul played his 2012 single "My Valentine" through a megaphone for a nostalgic effect. That made the song sound like a song that has passed the test of time. This was indeed a classic one.

4. Raw Blackbird
Sir Paul has played Blackbird multiple times, even when he was still with Wings, but never in the center of his audience which actually made him forget some of the song’s lyrics.

5. From Me To You/Love Me Do

These songs were the first Number 1 singles that the Beatles had. "Love Me Do" first and then "From Me To You" came surging in next. After the Beatles' early tours, "From Me To You" has never been played live again. Not until Sir Paul did it in NYC.

Paul is Live. Paul is Really LIVE.

Being an average Filipino, especially in times of the rising cost of commodities, is hard if you are idolizing artists. Take for example if you are a Beatles fan.

Imagine how much a single ticket to watch the remaining Beatles perform costs.

Aside from that, consider what happened back in 1966 here in the Philippines when the Beatles came to perform two concerts. They all hated the Philippines. In a similar scenario, they had problems also when they toured Japan earlier that same year. However, Paul McCartney has already returned to Japan and toured it repeatedly. Former Eraserheads frontman, Ely Buendia, tried to lure Ringo Starr back to the Philippines through Starr's project "Postcards from Paradise" but it was not successful.

With that, I say that the only way to ever watch them is via YouTube or any online live streaming services. I cannot say in words, nor express completely how grateful I am for the Internet today.

Last September 2018, Sir Paul McCartney made this happen. For the first time, as far as I know, he played a surprise concert in New York City and live streamed it on YouTube! Yes, people from around the planet were able to witness him and his band play live. We were watching with millions of people.

The free concert was part of the promotions for his latest album, "Egypt Station". Among the songs played in the free concert were "A Hard Day's Night," "Blackbird," "Let It Be," and "My Valentine". "Come On To Me," "I Don't Know," and "Fuh You" could be heard in the album.

Weeks after that free concert, Sir McCartney was again featured on a live-streamed show in YouTube for the Austin City Limits Music Fest. He played again an almost-3-hour set.

What a living legend Sir Paul really is.

Remembering the Only Jonas Brothers Concert in Manila... Yet

By October 30 of 2018, it would already be five years since the Jonas Brothers made the announcement of the band breaking up in a TV broadcast. That was over a year after they tried getting back together after at least a year of rest as the Jonas Brothers.

Image may contain: one or more people and night
Joe Jonas' fan selfie from  the Jonas Brothers Philippines Facebook page

By 2010, Nick Jonas has formed his side group, Nick Jonas and the Administration, while Joe Jonas released a solo pop-RNB album in 2011, Fastlife. The last tour of the Jonas Brothers was the 2010 Fall tour which also had the promotions for Camp Rock 2: The Final Jam. The last time they were on stage with the band together was when they performed in the Concert For Hope in March 2011. Since then, the burning question was this: Are the Jonas Brothers over?

But no, they were not over. At least, not until October of 2013.

They made a series of reunion concerts, starting in New York City’s Radio City Music Hall and then reaching Asia and Russia. The next stop was in the Philippines, a two-night concert (one in Manila, and another in Cebu) on October 19, and 20, 2012, and featured a mostly similar 26-song setlist to the one they had in New York City which ran for almost two hours!

I could remember the concert very well because it was the first time that I watched a foreign act, and also the first time that they were all here to perform. Back in May of that year, Joe Jonas was in Manila for a clothing line endorsement and had a two-song performance with “Just In Love” and “See No More”. He promised that he would bring his brothers with him soon and thank God he kept his promise. We were all fortunate to see them here before that unexpected break-up.

The Official Concert Poster from the organizer (not mine)

We were all hyped during the band’s entry to the stage with the song “We Will Rock You” in the background. After that, the trio was getting ready to open the night with their hit “When You Look Me In The Eyes”.

With that, I’d like to point out something that I noticed with Nick’s singing during “When You Look Me In The Eyes”. Since they started reuniting in 2012 and until their last performance of this song in their 2013 summer tour, and even in the digital album “Live”, I only got to hear Nick sing the coda part of this song similar to what he used to do back in their early days once and it was this Manila concert. I wouldn’t be able to point out the differences of the performance through writing, so here’s a video for that.

Notice these periods from these videos. All links are not mine but from other YouTubers. Thanks.

If you’re a fan and you’d notice this, I’d be pretty sure you would have the same chills that I had upon learning this.

Another thing that I noticed during the show was that there were no gimmicks, or trickeries, involved in the show. There wasn't even any runway for the ever-energetic Joe's roaming around the stage, like what fans saw in the "Jonas Brothers 3D Concert Experience". These things proved that the night was purely intended for celebrating and singing their old and new music with them.

Aside from that, I could also remember singing out to the new arrangement for some of their songs like the reggae version of “Hold On”, country version of “Pushin’ Me Away” and “Gotta Find You”. I also liked the semi-acoustic set up they did for “Give Love A Try”, “Turn Right” and “Gotta Find You”.

One last thing I could recall was everyone singing all throughout “Lovebug”. A funny moment was when Joe did not need to sing any of his parts because the whole crowd was singing it.

The trio during "Lovebug" from http://www.gmanews.tv

To close out the show, they had “Burnin’ Up” and the band introduction and their own introduction which was then followed by their final goodbye and bow to the crowd in the same old Jonas Brothers way.

What a night to remember, and to feel alive for all JoBros fans indeed. We definitely need more.

Only the Good Die Young

These men of the music industry have proven that those who are so damn good in their crafts might not have the chance of fully enjoying it. They may not be remembered for the longevity of their music career; however, they will still be remembered because they are simply great that anyone may forget to cross their names off.

1. Chester Bennington, 41

This man was the latest reason why the world has come to unite again for mourning his loss. The man that gave voices to the songs that surfaced the genre "Rap/Electronic Rock" to the music scene took his life on the birthday of his good friend, Chris Cornell, who is also on this list.

2. Kurt Cobain, 27

Nirvana frontman, Kurt Cobain, was found dead with a shotgun and a suicide note, suggesting that he took his own life. Before the suicide of Cobain, he was put in rehab because of suicidal tendencies.

3. Bob Marley, 36

Like everyone here in this list, this man also poured out his all in his craft. Think about reggae and the Rastafarian culture and you'd definitely think of Bob Marley. Cancer which developed under his toe nail was his tragedy.

4. Chris Cornell, 52

Chris Cornell also excelled in his musical path and was on the top with Chester Bennington. Among his works was the critically-acclaimed Bond theme song "You Know My Name".

Like his friend, Cornell also committed suicide due to depression and substance abuse issues.

5. John Lennon, 40

There can be no one greater than John Lennon. Just as he was starting to make his comeback in the music scene via Double Fantasy, he was shot by a fan named Mark David Chapman after giving Chapman an autograph. The tragic incident ended all hopes for a Beatles reunion in the 1985 Live Aid (where only Paul McCartney showed up and played a piano-only version of "Let It Be").

TOP 10: Jason Mraz Songs

Most of us music listeners probably first heard of Jason Mraz via 2008's "I'm Yours”. It was such a massive hit, it made me label the singer-songwriter as a "one-hit wonder". By 2011, "I Won't Give Up" came along with his messy curly hair and facial hair and by that time, I relabeled him as a "two-hit wonder".

Little did I know that those two massive hits of the singer-songwriter were just parts of the tip of the iceberg that his musical ingenuity is.

Almost everyone grew fond of that catchy, easy-to-join-in song that "I'm Yours" is. However, there came a time when I despised the singer-songwriter because of the mainstream attention that the song got. It was the first "Thinking Out Loud” and "Gangnam Style" that I could remember. Both were really huge hits that eventually became irritating to listen to.

In 2014, I was reintroduced to the music of Jason Mraz. It was only then that I knew that he's been playing and singing songs since the early 2000's. It was only then that I knew there was daylight before "I'm Yours". It was only then that I knew what I have been missing from his music.

Now, I'm going to share with you my Top 10 Jason Mraz songs. This is in no way an official list, this is just my personal favorite list. So, here it goes!

#10. The Boy's Gone

This is the perfect song for reflecting on yourself, about the things that you should have done, and of course, the things that you shouldn't have.

Everything and everyone will go back to its origin.

#9. 3 Things

"3 Things" feels like a generic Jason Mraz good vibes song you can always sing along for and with your friends and loved ones.

Whenever your life falls apart, just lend this song your ears. You may not have the answer, or the solution to your problem right away, but at least, you have the peace of mind to think of something outside your box.

 #8. Song For A Friend

Ever thought about writing a song for your best friend without putting any malice and hidden intentions, especially if you are of the same sex? Here is the perfect example for you. "Song For A Friend" basically seems like a conversation between two friends because it really is. Jason Mraz has revealed in one of his shows that it was a friend of his that inspired the song.
He said that he wanted to thank his roommate and friend, Jerry, for all the things that Jerry has done for him when he was just starting.

#7. Make It Mine

This Grammy-winning track is the second single after "I'm Yours" on Jason Mraz's third album "We Sing, We Dance, We Steal Things". Hear it once and you will surely be captivated by the positive vibes that this song can give to you.

"Make It Mine" features Jason Mraz's horn section, but the selling point of this song for me, other than the words and its live-life-to-the-fullest meaning in totality, is the beautiful melody that Jason Mraz can produce especially when Toca Rivera joins him in singing some parts in the chorus.

#6. I’m Yours

We all know it. Some know it by heart, some know it after hearing it from sons, daughters, and friends. We all love hearing and singing this song. We love it when this song is being sung to us. We love it we're the one singing it and dedicating it to someone else.

That is the best thing about this happy little hippie song. It just spells L-I-F-E and L-O-V-E every time it is being heard and sung. Moreover, according to Jason Mraz, he doesn't even remember sitting down to write it because it quickly went to him as it "came out of joy".

 #5./#4./#3. A Beautiful Mess/The Woman I Love/I Won’t Give Up

These songs are in a triple-tie because the messages in each are almost one and the same. They all sing about the same required element in every relationship: COMMITMENT.

With “A Beautiful Mess”, the song tells right from the start that things are not always perfect. There will be negativities, off-mood days, there is imperfection. There is an existing unconditional love even after being aware of the imperfections and all other bad stuff and that is happiness for them, as implied. If you find happiness in loving someone despite having the worst issues imaginable and unimaginable, don’t ever lose it.

Now we go to “The Woman I Love”. Every time Jason Mraz sings it in his concerts, he has this mini speech to introduce this song. It goes something like this: “I always invite the men to listen to this song. Men, it’s dedicated to you. Because anyone who has tried to stand beside a woman knows that sometimes our ladies lose it. Sometimes, they get a little loopy, they go bananas. Gentlemen, it’s up to you. It’s up to us to man up and love them back into the women we know them to be.” To all the gentlemen out there, you know he is right. I know his right, too, for I’ve always taken refuge in this song whenever there is a rift between me and my lover. It is like a tutorial of what to do and what not to do. Let’s always love them back into the women we know them to be.

“I Won’t Give Up” tells the complete story of unconditional love, faith, and commitment. The one great thing about this song is that it is not a song solely for your lover. It may actually be your dream, or goal in life. It can be even your faith in God, or in your religion, whatever religion you may be in. It tells that there will always be someone that will keep on waiting, pursuing and persevering for you. It won’t stop, it won’t end even if the skies will get rough.

#2. Mr. Curiosity

This track from his second album "Mr. A-Z" offers something that is rarely heard on a Jason Mraz track. This song is mostly played on piano and it has an opera solo made by Jason Mraz himself.

Like "The Boy's Gone", this song tackles reflection on life and it is basically asking for "Mr. Curiosity to come back to his life". Looking for Mr. Curiosity serves as a metaphor for finding interest, and curiosity again for his own life after experiencing Goliath-like life dilemmas.

The song really makes you feel the hopelessness and depressed state of the person after finding no reason to live and to be curious about what might happen next in his life.

This song was not originally in this spot. But, hey, this one deserves this change of place. It is a really good song and I recalled that it kind of helped me when I was losing curiosity in my life, too.

 #1. The Remedy (I Won't Worry)

Maybe it is not a surprise that the top spot belongs to the one that started it all for Jason Mraz. Actually, in my case, this was the song that reintroduced Jason Mraz's music to me. This was the daylight before "I'm Yours" and "I Won't Give Up"

"The Remedy" is another song inspired by one of Jason Mraz's friends. This time it is his childhood friend, Charlie Mingroni, who was diagnosed with cancer. Mraz was inspired by the positive outlook that his friend had shown even after the diagnosis of the Big C. "I won't worry my life away" was the actual concept of Mingroni's positivity, and Mraz immortalized it as "The Remedy", a song he plays in almost every performance he plays in up until now.

Whether with his Superband or not, just an intimate performance with his great pal Toca Rivera and his djembe, Jason Mraz really nails every performance he is into.

So give these aMRAZing songs their chance to be heard, folks!

*Photos and video links are not mine and I just put them here for sharing purposes. I do not claim any copyright with any of them.
