Decline

Are you going towards a decline? Or to be appropriate, a dick line.

There was this tweet from a Taylor Swift fan recently (as most of us know by now Taylor Swift is one o the positive news we're all lucky to have this year, new music!). Anyway, the tweet showed a series of photos shot by her lover, Joe Alwyn, with the caption "Taylor Swift shot by Joe Alwyn".

At first glance, what did you think were the contents of the tweet?

    A. Shot pertained to the act of shooting a gun;

    B. Shot pertained to the act of having photos, whether portraits or     not;

    C. A glass of liquor, preferably wine; or

    D. The lovebirds became the newest NBA stars enlisted to help an     aging star have a "shot" at the title (Did you see what I did there?)

Some fans were scared, thinking that the songwriter was shot in a morbid context. Anyway, the correct context of the tweet was definitely letter B. That's the beauty of the English language, or whatever language there is. It can not be defined by a solitary set of words and thoughts.

Case in point, the word "shot" can have five different meanings and without going deep into the context, you'd surely get lost.

With words like these, it's quite often that puns are born out of the premise of having words be spelled and spoken the sway despite having completely different meanings. Most of the time, puns revolving around dark humor are laughable because the reality is the opposite of the prepared joke. However, come to think if the table is to be turned?

I didn't think that I'd need to think about it until this morning when I woke up to the news of  a mother and son shot by a policeman. Shot. Dead.

The medium's not a digital nor an analogue camera, but a 9-mm Beretta. The only pictures that emerged from the event where documentation and the mugshot of the suspect.

This development, or  decline, (as WatchMojo would often do referring to "Dishonorable Mentions") had an impact to someone who has always been fond of puns and literary contortions. I would never look at that specific joke I mentioned at the start. I could only hope that Justice would wipe her glasses so she could clearly see how justice would have to be served. It just had to be served because a decline like this manifested by taking lives in a cold-blooded manner would never be something that should be taken lightly.

Something needs to be done. It's one of those instances wherein we could safely say that humanity had taken a couple of steps back from evolution. For a moment, we're back at the early moments of this thing they called "Survival of the Fittest".

Let's take those steps back towards the right path. Avoid a dick line.

Aso't Swine, Fine?

Post from Facebook.com

Laman ng balita ngayon
Mga hayop sa 'di magandang kondisyon
May aso sa ilalim ng transportasyon
Mga baboy, 'di na pwede sa kahit anong okasyon

Post from Facebook.com

Sakit sa mga baboy ay lumutang na
Dahil doon, lumutang na rin sila
Kita ng mga magbababoy ay kulang na
Kailan kaya probema'y mawawala

Siguro nga dapat ay kanin na lang
Kanin na rin ang magiging ulam
Kanin sa almusal at tanghalian
Para maiba, sinangag naman sa hapunan

At para maiba ulit
Pwedeng kakanin ang ipalit
Puto, biko, o sumang-latik
Isama na rin ang kalamay na aking hilig

At dahil magpa-Pasko na
Bida na naman nga sila
Puto bumbong at bibingka

Rizal, the Hero and the Lover

This year, 2018, marked the 122nd death anniversary of  Dr. Jose Rizal. The very first Rizal day was commemorated back in 1898, two years after he was executed in Bagumbayan, Philippines.

We all know already Rizal as the patriot who loved his country until his final moment.  This time around, let us try and know him as the man who experienced love in his lifetime.

Here are some of Rizal's many lovers over the years.

1. Segunda Katigbak

Segunda Katigbak from ironexplores.com

Rizal knew Segunda Katigbak through her brother, Mariano Katigbak, who was Rizal's friend and classmate. Rizal was very much like all adolescent boys when he met her. Because Segunda was studying in the same school as her sister, Rizal would go to La Concordia College not only to visit her sister but also to have the chance to see Segunda. He lost hopes on pursuing her when he knew that Segunda was arranged to marry Manuel Luz.

2. Leonor Valenzuela

Leonor Valenzuela from spot.ph

Rizal used his excellence in writing to get his way with Leonor Valenzuela. He wrote letters to her using invisible ink. The invisible ink would only be seen when touched with light. According to historians, this trick of Rizal made Leonor fall for him. Although, the most probable reason for Rizal to use this trick was that he was also fond of another girl that time who was also named Leonor, coincidentally.

3. Leonor Rivera

Leonor Rivera was a distant relative of Rizal. They were also childhood friends. You know what happens with childhood friends. As they grow and mature, they notice changes and soon after, they become childhood sweethearts. Leonor learned about Rizal's nationalistic aspirations and she was not happy about Rizal leaving the country. Eventually, Leonor was arranged to marry Henry Charles Kipping. Rizal was hurt upon learning about her marriage.

4. Nellie Boustead

Rizal met Nellie Boustead on one of his European trips. He stayed with her family and even hanged out with Antonio Luna, who was pursuing Nellie at the time. Little did Antonio knew that Nellie was developing feelings for Rizal. Antonio burst out on a gathering under the influence of alcohol, raging into sarcastic remarks about Rizal and Nellie. According to historians, a duel was about to begin between Rizal and Antonio. Luckily, they were intercepted and apologies were made. This has got to be one of the biggest "what ifs" in our history, but they say that there are no "what ifs" in history.

5. Josephine Bracken

Josephine Bracken from en.wikipedia.org

Josephine Bracken is Mrs. Jose Rizal. They met when Josephine and his father reach out to Rizal while he was exiled in Dapitan to treat the ailing eyes of her father. Soon after, they fell for each other and settled in Dapitan.

Jose Rizal was indeed adored by many, there were also Suzanne Jacoby, and O-Sei-San, to name a few more, and maybe that was because of his personality. He was a very clever man. Because he was a frequent traveler, he had to have the personality of a man willing to adjust and adapt to any culture and nation.

He was clever enough to successfully interact with different people and actually leave a mark on their lives.

Paul is Live. Paul is Really LIVE.

Being an average Filipino, especially in times of the rising cost of commodities, is hard if you are idolizing artists. Take for example if you are a Beatles fan.

Imagine how much a single ticket to watch the remaining Beatles perform costs.

Aside from that, consider what happened back in 1966 here in the Philippines when the Beatles came to perform two concerts. They all hated the Philippines. In a similar scenario, they had problems also when they toured Japan earlier that same year. However, Paul McCartney has already returned to Japan and toured it repeatedly. Former Eraserheads frontman, Ely Buendia, tried to lure Ringo Starr back to the Philippines through Starr's project "Postcards from Paradise" but it was not successful.

With that, I say that the only way to ever watch them is via YouTube or any online live streaming services. I cannot say in words, nor express completely how grateful I am for the Internet today.

Last September 2018, Sir Paul McCartney made this happen. For the first time, as far as I know, he played a surprise concert in New York City and live streamed it on YouTube! Yes, people from around the planet were able to witness him and his band play live. We were watching with millions of people.

The free concert was part of the promotions for his latest album, "Egypt Station". Among the songs played in the free concert were "A Hard Day's Night," "Blackbird," "Let It Be," and "My Valentine". "Come On To Me," "I Don't Know," and "Fuh You" could be heard in the album.

Weeks after that free concert, Sir McCartney was again featured on a live-streamed show in YouTube for the Austin City Limits Music Fest. He played again an almost-3-hour set.

What a living legend Sir Paul really is.

Why Filipino Fans are Unlonely

While in Singapore, Jason Mraz held a press conference on October 29 and live-streamed it via Facebook Live. In the said press conference, Mraz announced that he would be bringing the good vibes through his Good Vibes 2019 Tour in Asia next year.

Mraz said that there would be six shows in Asia for the whole month of May, starting on May 8, 2019, in Manila. The series of shows ends in Shanghai.

Aside from the tour announcement, Mraz also answered a few questions from the press. One question was about the reason why the tour was named "Good Vibes Tour" and not "Know Tour" instead. Mraz responded in a very Jason Mraz--way, saying that he only meant for the album to be named "Know." for it to be the follow up to the 2014 released album "Yes!". He said that to transform the negative vibe that the word "No" could bring, he changed it into "Know" as some sort of wordplay. With the "Good Vibes Tour", he wanted to spread the positive mindset that he has shared through this new album even more, on a much wider aspect.

He also shared that "Know." was in the works since January 1, 20,16 and that the working title that he had was "Master Peace". This phrase actually made it into the album in the ballad "Love is Still the Answer" (To learn how to master peace, or master war...). I thought that this song was crafted during the early days of this album, hence, the working title of "Master Peace".

He also shared that during the creation of the album, he had been far from home, far from his wife. This was the reason why the album was filled with love notes and letters for his wife. He also went back to songs from his past like the single "Have It All" which was written when he was in Myanmar in 212, the song for his wife "Might As Well Dance", and the 1999 track "Sleeping to Dream".

The creation of the album was a trial and error and a mix of ups and downs for him. With his superband, the Raining Jane, and Toca Rivera, the music scene was finally ready for more good vibes from Jason Mraz.

Aside from the aformentioned singles, fans would be expecting hits such as "Unlonely", "More Than Friends", "Let's See What the Night Can Do", and probably a debut live version of the song "No Plans". Mraz hinted that there might be newer and unreleased songs in the upcoming tour.

The all-time favorites like "The Remedy", "Unfold", "Common Pleasure", "Tonight, Not Again", "No Stopping Us", "Mr. Curiosity", and "Zero Percent Interest" would also be a great addition to the set list, as far as long-time Jason Mraz fans would be concerned, especially if done with more Toca Rivera than Raining Jane.

Surely, Asian fans found that it was matchless to #Know this good vibes alert.

Ang SKIP Train at ang SIKIP Train

This is a poem written in Filipino pertaining to the commuter trains being used in Manila, Philippines.

Alin ang gusto mong sakyan?
Ang tren na walang laman
O iyong puno ng taumbayan
Na siguradong ika'y pagpapawisan

Wala rin namang ibang mangyayari
Hindi ka makakapili
Kung ano ang tumapat sa sarili
Doon ka na mayayari

Kapag maluwag ang pasukan
Siguradong 'di ka mahihirapan
Pero kung masikip ang madatnan
Magiging madugo ang labanan

Ang maluwag na sasakyan
Minsa'y hindi naman tumitigil
Habang ang masikip naman
Ikaw na mismo ang magpipigil

'Di mo rin naman malalaman
Hindi mo mapaghahandaan
Pumila nang maayos at dahan-dahan
Kalma, swertehan lang sa pwesto 'yan!

Silencing Resilience

There is nothing worse than failing, except for the fact, perhaps,  that you had given your all - effort, force, time, money, and almost everything - but still failed. Good thing there are things such as these: resilience, second chances which really turns into multiple chances, and redeeming

A scene in the movie "Rocky Balboa" had Rocky and his son, Robert, confronting about the struggle that they have had in their relationship as father and son. Eventually, Rocky spoke this very moving line: "But it ain't about how hard you hit. It's about how hard you can get hit and keep moving forward; how much you can take and keep moving forward. That's how winning is done! Now, if you know what you're worth, then go out and get what you're worth."

There would always be room for improvement, just as there would be enough space for you getting back up and showing that resilience you have in you. Perseverance, determination, aggressiveness, and yes, resilience. These are the virtues that Rocky spoke about. You would know this especially if you have watched the Rocky movie series starting from the first one. He has had losses, but he always got back up and fought his way into the title. That has been his story. Losing and then, winning. That was how winning was done.

This is not to criticize that movie (I love that movie, I like Stallone!), but what if it does not need to be "losing and then, winning" and "just winning" instead? Why not give your supreme effort, strength, heat, and everything in your first shot?

Take for example during examinations in schools, we always say this whenever we fail exams: "I will just review more, and study harder for the next examination." Another one goes like this: "I will spend more time studying and not waste my time for the next examinations."

You know that there will be an exam, and you know that you may fail if you will not study and spend more time for learning; yet, you took it for granted because you know there will be more exams to come which may give you chances to redeem yourself.

From my point of view, I see this idea of resilience as an excuse for incompetence and lack of discipline. Instead of doing the wrong things, why don't we do the right things which will eventually lead us to our aim? Being resilient is good because it shows that you can still go back after a beating. You can still take the hit and move forward despite things crashing onto you.

There is way out though. In safety management, there's a saying that goes like this - Accidents are best prevented when? Before they happen. This means that if you have the chance to stop a scenario from happening, then take it and act upon it.

If you have a chance to stop failing, act upon it. Think of the things that you must change, improve, or retain. A part of being resilient is being able to adapt and change and grow. That being said, not learning and just letting things go on a repeat is not a display of true resilience.

If you're going to waste your chance to go back up, you are just going to silence your chance. What really matters here is that you give not your almost everything, but your everything, instead. All you got for your goal!

Resilience is good, but not until it becomes a habit, a cycle that will just go on repeat.
